"FOOD FOR THOUGHT"
BY THE REV. BENNY REPPOND
God is worthy of our
exaltation, worship and praise
Psalms 57:5 NKJV - "Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; Let your glory be above all the earth." KJV
As a child, I loved baseball. I would watch the games on Saturday with our black and white TV; I would go out and play the game of baseball by myself, throwing the ball against the concrete steps and catching it when it came back, throwing the ball as high as I could and running to catch it. Even in mowing the yard, I would pretend to hit the ball and run around the bases. Baseball was something I enjoyed playing and watching.
Of course I had my favorite team and players; the Yankees with Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, the Moose, Bobby Richardson, Roger Maris, Whitey Ford and so on. To me, they were the heroes. My favorite was Mantle; I thought he was the greatest player of all time and I would talk about him and pretend to be him in my make-up games. I read every book I could find about Mickey and I would sing of his mighty home runs and great play.
Many of us exalt players of ball teams, musicians, actors or politicians because we all want to have a hero or someone to look up to. One of the saddest days of my life was when I found out Mickey Mantle had a lot of bad habits and did things that he should not be doing. We all have seen our heroes exposed with failures because they are human and all of us have some kind of flaw in us. We can have joy in the accomplishments that they have obtained in their sport, artistic ability or other things that they have done but not like their personal failures.
Today, I want to tell you of someone who we can truly exalt or lift up and sing the praises of for what they have done. We will never have to be ashamed of calling them our hero because they will never fail us. That is God Almighty; his accomplishments in creating this wonderful world and universe are beyond comprehension. Scientists are still studying and researching this Earth, oceans, planets, moons and studying the stars and finding new things every day.
The greatest thing that we can exalt God Almighty for is his love for mankind in giving his only begotten Son Jesus to come and die for a people who mocked, cursed, did evil against one another and disobeyed him. That this God would be willing to forgive us and to let us live in a city called heaven is truly amazing and worthy of praise.
I know that it is in our nature to have heroes, someone to look up to. So why not let Jesus and our Heavenly Father be the one we choose to exalt and praise? He is worthy and you will find that he is someone you can trust to never fail you.
